When writing a research paper, it’s important to know how to summarize your sources and paraphrase and when. Sometimes it’s more effective to paraphrase a source rather than to directly quote it, and vice versa. Knowing when to paraphrase and when to quote directly can help make your paper run more smoothly, flowing from one idea to the next without making it seem like two different people are talking. It’s also important to know because it prevents plagiarism. Being unaware of how to summarize sources and paraphrase can lead to plagiarism, and ignorance is no excuse for plagiarizing someone’s work.
